There is an old joke shared among teachers..... A mother comes in trying to lure her child out of bed on the first day back to school. The mother shares all the good things that can happen in school but her child still won’t get out of bed. Her child talks about her fear that no one will like her and that the work will be too hard. The mom keeps on encouraging saying how the teacher will like her and then her child says, “But mom, you don't understand. I am the teacher !"
Greetings, There is an old joke shared among teachers..... I am the teacher !" The start of a new school year brings with it many emotions. Summer is over and with it comes schedules, homework, and new adjustments. What are some ways we, as parents, can help smooth out the rough edges for our children during this transition period.

Thanks Jeanette for taking the time to put together a great site. I am a retired high school counselor and know this site could be helpful to counselors working with older students as well. I used to take such care in trying to get each student's schedule perfect prior to the first day of school. Students have enough of a challenge getting a great start even when their schedule is solid. I loved it when parents and/or students called or emailed to check in prior to school to make sure everything is all set or to identify a potential problem. Maybe the period for their music or theater class changed due to their summer activity-who knows. Best to check with the counselor before school to make sure all is well.
