Classroom Management
Counselors are a resource for teachers in a variety of ways. One of the ways we support our teachers is to help teachers with their classroom management whether it be for an individual student or the entire class.
The Basic Procedures
- The teacher meets with the counselor to process some concerns she is having with student or class. We meet as often as needed.
- Parents are informed and become part of the process in most cases.
- Teacher may decide to make referral for Teacher Assistance Team and/or teacher and counselor come up with strategies.
- Primary grades - Use Social Stories with students (see below to how to create social story).
- Behavior Plan 1 - Use a Feedback/Tally system to modify a students behavior. (see below to how to create behavior plan).
- Behavior Plan 2 - Use the Paragraph/Reminder plan. (see below to how to create this plan)
Main Concept
- Each classroom or individual management system is designed specifically for the individual needs or issues.
- We strive to find the right fit for the profile of the student or class.
- The key to this process is the gathering of data and insight into the problem.
- We often look beyond the behavior and try to focus on what the underlying needs of the student might be.
- Our goal is to focus on the strengths of the student when designing our plans.
- It is an ongoing process of refining and revising as the child’s behavior or class behavior evolves.
- It is our hope as counselors that teachers come to us early on in the process. It could save teachers a lot of time in the long run.
