All About Groups
There are many different types of groups offered in school. Learn more about group process and content and how to effective run a here and now group in the school setting.
Changing Family
Students who are dealing with the changes in the family due to deivorce or separation. The children come together to learn about divorce and to share their stories , thoughts and feelings. These groups are often mixed ages.
Deployed Parents
Children whose parents are deployed share their stories, thoughts and feelings. These groups are often mixed ages.
Adoption Group
This group is designed for mixed ages of children who have been adopted. It provides an opportunity for them to come together to share their stories, thoughts and feelings.
Sand Tray Group
This unique group provides a combination of play and sharing of thoughts and feelings. Best used with 3rd grade boys who tend to be less verbal in their expression of thoughts and feelings.
Urgency Study Skills Group
This group is offered to students who are passive learners. They do not have a sense of urgency to learn, to get school work completed, etc. Generally this group is given to 4th graders.
I Can Kindergarten Group
The "I Can" group provides an opportunity for the counselor to get to know the students in kindergarten.
All About Me 1st grade Group
The All About Me groups provides an opportunity for the counselor to get to know the students as well as a way for the students to make connections with each other.
Play Group 2nd grade Group
The best way for children to learn how to get along is through play. The play group provides an opportunity for observed play and a setting where feedback is given by the students to each other.
Friendship Groups Grades 3rd & up
The best place to develop friendships is in a group setting. Groups providing a setting for learning social skills such as listening, paraphrasing, giving empathy all while developing close connections with others.
Organization Skills Grades 4th & up
Many teachers refer students for organization skills. Students often share they think they are dumb yet mostly they are missing the organization sills. This groups focuses on helping students take ownership for their learning and gaining skills to master it.
Transition to Middle School
Leaving the security of elementary school and moving on to the unknown can be a time of stress. This groups gives students the opportunity to discover they are not alone. In addition, the students explore their strengths and knowledge that they can use in their upcoming transition. There is a lot of hands on, practical information shared in this group.
